Initial test of this motor. Noticed slight oil near top of crankcase /armature plate. Knowing crankcase pressure will be low if this seal is bad, best to change while I do a tune up and have armature plate off. Best test would be removing armature plate, clean seal area and reinstall ingition and run for a while then remove armature plate ond look for oil? If the seal is bad I’m gonna need OMC seal remover p/n 386629 ,seal installer P/n319872,where do I get these tools? Place a WTB in classifieds here? Thanks ,Jim

It can be pretty tough to remove that seal without the special tool. Oh yes, it can be done, but you run the risk of damaging the crankcase casting and introducing debris into the upper bearing.
Installing the new seal can usually be accomplished with a deep socket, or perhaps a piece of plastic pipe. I know Frank used to make the remover tools, don’t know if he still does, look on ebay as well..

Try this little test first to see how bad it is leaking. Some fuel mix or oil poured on top of the seal will bubble or get sucked into the motor while turning it over.

I made some awhile back, but am not doing it any more. I gave club member Richard A. White as set of prints and my blessings. He has been working on the project for some time now. Send him a PM if interested.

Fleetwin-definately don’t want to damage the crankcase and get into"a can of worms" as you say. That’s what the special tools are for .This is a friends motor and I want to do it right the first time. I looked closely at the tools in the 9.9 repair manual ,should be fairly easy with those tools.
Mumbles- great idea with the oil! Turn it over with the prop in the correct direction of course. Great video! I sent you a PM
Frank- I looked at your site before posting this thread, didn’t see the tools. I will PM Richard A. White
              Thanks guys, Jim
