What purpose does this serve? Why is this lower unit built like this? I was told by the gentleman I bought this Evinrude from it was commercial or military. I cannot find anything about it on the web. It’s on a 1976 Evinrude 40 horsepower model number 40654A. Thanks in advance. Brandon

You are referring to the wings on the skeg? I suppose they would provide some additional protection for the prop, and some cost in performance…..

The Armed Services require extra propeller protection because they often run up on rocky beaches. . . 😉

There is an illustration of that style skeg on the marineengine page for that motor. http://www.marineengine.com/parts/johns … n=Gearcase

1982 commercial versions of the 25 and 40hp models both have the gearcase wings. http://www.boatinfo.no/lib/evinrude/bro … e.html#/26

If you have too many, AND not enough, you're a collector.

They’re great for gathering weeds and other aquatic vegetation frim what I have heard. I have never had a motor with them.

might make it get on plane quicker, give it lift like the aftermarket fins, no?
