I have always wondered why i don’t have a welch plug on top of the powerhead showing the model and serial #’s. The transom clamp tag is there, so i figure it wasn’t removed to disguise a stolen motor. There is a flat plug down below in the recess where the convex one should be.. I can’t imagine why someone would remove it.
How does a replacement warrantee powerhead’s welch plug read? Blank? or Missing like mine?
      Just curious. Thanks.EDIT dang spellcheck!

Sometimes a replacement powerhead’s Welch plug will be stamped RPH, sometimes it will have no Welch plug. And sometimes it will have a small hole in the Welch plug when the plug was removed from the original powerhead and reinstalled in the new one.

Sometimes these ID plugs get loose and just fall out as well. Does the powerhead look like it was replaced? Is it painted, and if so does the paint seem to match the original finish?

As i recall when i acquired this motor 4 years ago ,the paint looked original to me. As i’ve been working on it I have been cleaning and repainting as i go,when i get good access for using OMC spray paint. Now i can’t remember if the pocket under where the welsh plug was painted or not. It is now.
I think I would have found the loose welsh plug down in the pan by now, but i will take another close look.
Good point fleetwin, when i got the motor , the powerhead seemed to be the right shade of blue, there are at least 4 shades of blue over the years.
              Thanks EDIT

sounds like the powerhead is probably original then…
