Fleetwin- also after running at WOT ,and going down to idle slowly, it was fine. Also fine going from Idle to Wot quckly or slowly. I think I got it as set best as possible.
Still a bit hard to start though, when cold. When all warmed up it’s easy to start ,used a rope today, since I had the recoil off to use a Stewart Warner handheld tach. Thanks. Jim"Some people want to know how a watch works, others just want to know what time it is"

Perhaps you choke linkage is messed up causing the choke to be/stay fully closed while cranking. I don’t know if the orientation makes a difference in the choke knob, but a worn/missing grommet will surely cause problems when starting cold.May 12, 2016 at 1:18 pm #36460Isn’t the compression on those motors supposed to be pretty high…..around 110? Maybe it is the compression keeping it from idling well.
May 12, 2016 at 1:35 pm #36462I’m not sure what the compression is supposed to be on these motors but I have a 1978 2R78R and it is right close to 90 psi also. It runs and idles well but sometimes it takes more to start than I think it should. It is pretty finicky about the carb settings. Once it’s dialed, in snug up the packing to avoid accidentally moving it. That’s pretty easy to do on these motors.

May 12, 2016 at 9:35 pm #36481I have a ’84 model that I’ve never touched…..This thread has me dreading getting started on it… I hope It runs decent.
May 13, 2016 at 12:40 am #36490There isn’t much to these little 2hp singles. I wouldn’t be too apprehensive. I have a 75 Evinrude 2hp I need to get into a bit deeper. When I got it one of the reeds was bent. It still doesn’t want to pop. Not sure what’s wrong yet. I’ll figure it out eventually. They are neat little motors.

May 13, 2016 at 2:33 am #36498Here’s a ’72 two horse which never did seem to want to run right. It kept getting harder and harder to start and finally wouldn’t start at all. Under the head I found a blown head gasket with a matching burn thru groove in the top of the cylinder. A little bit of time in the lathe straightened out both the head and the cylinder. The local dealer brought the crank seals in but I had to order new bearings from China. A new piston and rings were found online so hopefully after a new paint job and decals it will run again.

Robbie RobertsonMay 14, 2016 at 12:30 am #36528I’ll post a vid later whenever I get it together. Not sure when.
Did I say ’72? I think this one’s actually a ’73 and another one I had was a ’72 motor. They all start to look the same after a while.
Here’s another reason I’m glad I tore it down. The water tube had been rubbing on the driveshaft and was almost worn thru. 😯
