Mumbles, might I ask more specifically where you got a lower crank bearing for one of those?

Yikes! 😮 Ill be sure to check that on my ’75 when i get into that one. My ’78 runs pretty nicely now. I’ll have to make a vid of that one sometime. I just resealed the gearcase and replaced the impeller on that one a few weeks ago.

I got them from China as my dealer couldn’t find any. These Torringtons were the correct size.

Yeah, the lower bearing/seal housings are a trouble spot for these engines, prone to bearing wear/water damage. To replace the lower seal, one must first remove (and destroy) the lower needle bearing from the housing to get at the seal. I always used to just replace the complete unit, not possible these days. Unfortunately, the lower crank race was usually worn as well when water had damaged the lower needle bearing.

I managed to press the bearing out from the bottom of the housing after making a slightly oversize shaft to fit the bearing but a large drift would probably work to. Once the bearing was out, the seal was easy. Assembly was the reverse.

Mumbles,Surprised to read you had to order the lower bearing from China. I wrote the demensions down from the Torrington link ,gotta be a source here in the States?
Seems like the upper and lower bearings are one of the main causes of poor running /hard starting, the timing thrown off by crank movement. I’ll be doing it on both of my 2 hp. On the to do list , it keeps growing…

Mumbles, you have a source/mfg Pn# for the lower seal?

Upper and lower seals P/N is 315256, which I obtained thru my local OMC/BRP dealer.

The only reason I sourced the bearings offshore was they were a heck of a lot cheaper than anything I could find on this side of the Pacific and these particular ones came in a pack of four and possibly had free shipping. Can’t remember. Also, going straight to the source and avoiding the middleman helps to keep costs down! 😎

Top and bottom bearing the same? That would be cool if ya get 4 from the overseas dealer. ME wants $20 for the top one.
