Hello all, thanks for letting me join this forum. I’ve looked for the search function and can’t find it so I’ll ask my question. My 1978 (per the serial number on the motor mount – 1976 per the shift linkage) 85hp Evinrude is starting to give me problems when trying to shift into forward. I’ve messed with the adjuster on the shift cable at the motor and that seems to temporarily work but only temporarily. Where can I purchase a shop manual for this motor? Any help with this or how to navigate the forum will be appreciated.

actually worked on these engines for a living……

How about posting the engine’s model number, or posting a picture of the engine. The gearcases were completely different from 1976 to 1978, so you will want to get the proper manual…
Give us more of a description of the shifting issues you are having. Perhaps you just have a cable or control box issue, have you tried shifting into forward by hand with the cables removed?
