Hello to all;
May I please have an exploded drawing, or parts list, for the powerhead of my ’79 9.9 HP?
I don’t even know what the part is called. It is related to the recoil starter, and appears to be a pawl – like part which may engage when the recoil is released. It’s black, plastic, and has a small spring which fell out and down when the plastic broke. Dag nab it. And yeah, I am somewhat embarrassed that I can’t give a better description. It’s at the top of the throttle shaft. I hope the pic helps.
And, if anyone can figure out my vague description, is there any way of replacing this w/out pulling the flywheel?
Many thanks!

AlanSeptember 4, 2016 at 8:27 am #43261The plastic ratchet thing’s spring on my 89 9.9 was bent and distorted when I got the motor. I removed the whole thing and left it off. It is a safety interlock that won’t let you start the engine in gear.

Here is a youtube video for starter repair if you should need.

September 4, 2016 at 3:44 pm #43280Well, I couldn’t care less if it starts in gear.
The main motor, (’67 80 HP Speedifour) starts in gear; I like starting in gear!
I’m gonna break the plastic pawl it off and throw it away. Or tie it back, or something.
The video is also appreciated; excellent reference.
Many thanks, a great weekend, and happy motoring to all!
AlanUpdate; wow Fleetwin, pulling those two screws was so simple and obvious! Worked perfectly.
I thank you for your gentle reminder.September 4, 2016 at 5:30 pm #43284Instead of pulling the flywheel, you can probably just remove the two clamp screws holding the vertical throttle shaft in place, move it out from under the flywheel slightly, and remove the plastic recoil interlock.
