I just purchase this 1980 70 HP Evinrude outboard. It turns over just fine. I’m overhauling the fuel system, and I found the previous owner broke off the brass nipple going into the middle carburettor. Can this brass nipple be replaced? It’s broken off almost even with the cast float chamber. Any ideas on how to fix this issue? I’ve posted an ad on the Free Classifieds a week ago for a new or used float chamber, but have not received any replies. Can this broken piece be extracted? Is a replacement part available? The part number is 387590.
I’ve tried several website searches and it comes up as obsolete or no longer available. If anyone has a float chamber or a complete carb. sitting around, please contact me at: 817-578-9670 or send me a PM or email me at: schneiderg2001@yahoo.com
I would think you could carefully drill it out and press in something similar as a replacement. Possibly even use the broken off piece if it’s long enough.
Good idea! If I can’t find a used or new float chamber a used carb. or even a new brass fitting, I may try this! Any suggestions if any type of sealant will help hold this in place? Marine-Tex?
Ideally, you would look for a fit maybe .002 tight, in which case, if things are clean and smooth, you probably don’t even need any sealant. Up to a couple thou loose, a higher strength anaerobic "thread locker" will work. Anything near or above that, a good quality epoxy like the mentioned MarineTex will work. (Using epoxy on engines, one has to bear in mind that many of them will soften at a fairly low temperature….)
