I got my friend’s Mercury started after checking spark,
cleaning the intake screen, and tightening the
diaphragm screws on the carb, but I’m not seeing
any water pumping out the tell-tale, but it is blowing
      a little foggy exhaust.
In following back the tell-tale hose, it appears that it goes
back to the top of the head, and I didn’t notice any
      thermostat housing.

After coming in and looking at the ME diagrams, it shows
“on thermostat engines” a thermostat coming off the port
      side of the engine.
I haven’t gone back out yet to see if there’s that also,
      but the present question is…….
When starting a cold engine, should I see water squirting
      out somewhere?
I probably ran it a minute and a half
      between the two starts.
      Thanks.

No thermostat found. I removed the tell-tale hose and it was clear,
unscrewed the elbow on the head, and all clear there too.
Blew some compressed air in the tell-tale hole, and bubbles
        blew in the water.
Started it back up, put it in gear, and wound it up some, and
it pumps a weak stream of water…… guessing the water pump
        impeller has seen better days.

Yeah, not familiar with the merc cooling system, but it appeared as though steam/exhaust was coming out of that telltale, which probably indicates it is not plugged.  Was the engine gettting hot, kind of looked that way.  In this case, I think the telltale is telling the truth.

I’m not that familiar with these Mercs either, although I grew up with my dad’s 1973
model on the back of a pontoon boat. Was always a great running motor until it
              sat too many years.

I would think that it was starting to get hot, but not to the point of smoking or
making funny noises! When put in gear and wound up a ways, it would start
to pump water, but pissing a weak stream.

Awaiting to hear back if I’m going to do anything further on this motor.
Hopefully an impeller replacement isn’t too tricky on this motor if the
owner desires me to try it!

It should have something coming out the tell tale at idle….and of course, above idle. Never trust a Merc impeller of that type, any more than two years. They take a bad set and sometimes come undone from the impeller hub. Hey, at least that one has a stainless drive shaft. An impeller shouldn’t be too big of a deal. Just be gentle putting the lower unit back on. Don’t force it. It’s possible to bend the purposely-bent water tube even further. That’s a little complicated to fix right.

                Long live American manufacturing!

Hopefully the impeller has taken a set, of come off its hub.  Will cross my fingers the impeller didn’t disintegrate spraying chunks all through the cooling system.

Thanks for the reply and suggestions. Anything special to keep in mind regarding
getting the shift rod clocked correct, or is that even an issue?
                    Thanks!

That thought had crossed my mind too!
