        I install them in forward, too. If I remember right, those splines are cut in such a way that they will only engage in one way. Sometimes that doesn’t make it any easier. Sometimes the splines will actually align better in neutral; but the deal there is not to let the case slip into forward by accident, while you’re jockeying it around.

            Standing the motor upside down usually helps getting everything lined up.  I discovered this while working on my older Merc 60 6 horse.
