What are peoples thoughts on the 1995 Evinrude 3 cyl Motor vs the 1982 Evinrude 2 cyl? Main concerns for me are reliability, fuel economy, slow trolling speed. Obviously the 95 is newer but newer does not always mean better. I’d be interested to hear some thoughts.
July 11, 2017 at 12:55 pm #61418Well I would go with the earlier twin. Parts are likely cheaper.
July 11, 2017 at 1:07 pm #61420for trolling ( main objective ? ) 3 cyl are probably smoother nothing wrong with 1982 ‘s …. I have several oldies late 50 that are excellent trollers and esy /cheap to fix in case ….
you did not specify engine size …. maybe a small…. 5 or 7.5 would ensure fuel economy and quieter days trolling

July 11, 2017 at 1:34 pm #61423Sorry your right I forgot to mention 35 hp. I have a 15 hp Johnson which I love on my 12′ fisher but on the bigger boat it takes a 35 hp. The older Motor is $500 cheaper.
July 11, 2017 at 1:51 pm #61426I have not heard good things about the later 3-cylinder OMC 3-cylinders in the 35hp range. I think I’d be inclined to go with the earlier model…
July 11, 2017 at 1:54 pm #61428I believe the 1995 35 HP is a 2 cylinder. You don’t get into 3 cylinders that year until you get to 50 HP. Marine engine.com only shows 2 cyl 35s for 1995.
The 3 cyl 35s may be later 4-strokes – in that case, watch out for weight.

July 11, 2017 at 2:53 pm #61431Again, not sure just which engines you are referring to…I think the three cylinder 25/35s were introduced in 1996. In any event, you are probably better off going for the 1982 2cylinder for all the reasons mentioned…Simpler, more reliable, easier to find and cheaper repair parts….
Those three cylinder engines were nice running, but plagued by cheesy add on pieces such as the oil injection/fuel pumps. They are definitely harder to service, more complex, less reliable than the 32CI models of the early 80s….July 16, 2017 at 1:49 am #61675Thanks for all the tips I opted to the 1982 motor. It seemed to be a consensus decision.
