I built a quickie stand today so I could check out this free
landfill outboard my brother in lawn gave me.
It’s missing the starter solenoid. The parts diagram shows it takes a
Sierra 18-5808, like this one……..Will an “automotive style” starter solenoid work for these 1980’s motors, unlike the 50’s
with the mercury switches?
I might have an automotive one laying around. I don’t want to buy a new one until I at least evaluate
the motor, i.e., compression and spark.
Thanks.Prepare to be boarded!
March 21, 2022 at 7:23 pm #256603It will work if you know how to cheat on the wiring. 12V from Start switch goes to “S” terminal on the solenoid. DO NOT connect anything to the “I” terminal. Solenoid base must be grounded. The safety switch on the motor (if it has one) will not work with this setup.

March 22, 2022 at 6:59 pm #256691Me thinks the motor was at the Recycler’s / Dump for a good reason.
Sometimes the motor seems jammed up or frozen, and if you mess
around with it, it would turn over with a wrench, with notable compression.
Made some funny noises as well when it was getting un-jammed.
I dropped the lower unit today and popped the flywheel which wasn’t
the problem. I should have quit there, but out of curiosity, I
pulled out the powerhead, and it’s awaiting on the work bench
for further inspection.
Most likely I’ll be using the parts for trading stock at Tomahawk!Prepare to be boarded!
