This 40hp I’ve been playing with, converting it to 50hp – only carbs and reeds needed, 50hp uses the same block. On the reeds, the reed stops allow the reed to open more than the 40hp stops. But on only one side there is that narrow strip that goes between the reed and reed stop, I would guess to allow the reed to open a little further. So my question(s) is/are, is this the factory setup? Would I gain anything by putting that thin strip on both sides, or possibly lose performance because they have it figured that only one side needs it? I know this is a tough question, but so far I haven’t seen an exploded view of the reed block, always just an assembled block. No reed, reed block, reed stop, screws as separate parts.

Look at a 1978 140 intake manifold assy. on ME. It gives you the break down of the parts for a four petal per side reed box.

Dan, thanks for the reply, after talking on the phone I don’t there would be enough gain to justify removing the intake again. Part of my concern was the extra spacer on only one side, wanted to make sure someone hadn’t made a shade-tree change to the reeds. Knowing where to go to look at the reed block exploded view might come in handy in the future.
