Need to replace the impeller on my 1985 Evinrude 9.9/15hp.  I did this once a long time ago and remember leaving the motor in gear before removing lower unit.

I don’t know if luck was involved but all went well.  What is the best procedure for this repair?

      Sincerely,

      Doug Follett

Some good YT videos guided me recently.  As I recall, reverse gear gave me the best access to loosen the shift linkage clamp through the gap of the two cases(upper/lower).

Yup, put the motor in reverse before loosening the six cap screws holding the gearcase on. Doing this will lift the shift rod in the gearcase making it easier to get at the top bolt in the shift rod connector as the gearcase comes down.  If you use a  1/4″ drive 3/8 socket, you still might have to pry the gearcase from the exhaust housing a bit to get it in. Just make sure the gearcase is in reverse before putting it back together or you’ll never get that upper connector bolt in there properly.

Leeroys has some good info on the 9.9/15 horse family of motors.

On those 9.9s and 15s from the 1980s to early 1990s, they are the only motors I’ve found where an aftermarket Sierra impeller did not pump at a slow idle to keep the telltale stream going, even when the pump housing was replaced.  On the two motors I had this problem with, a factory OEM impeller cured the problem.

Yeah, you will want to pull that shift rod upwards, can’t remember if that is forward or reverse right now though.  This job is usually easier if you have a helper, that SS shift rod screw is easy to strip.  Once you get the gearcase off, you can tell us why you are replacing the impeller..  Just routine maintenance or is there a cooling problem.  Oftentimes the impellers will lose their bond to the hub, so have a close look at that.

If everything looks “OK” once the gearcase is off, you may have an issue with the upper water tube grommet(s), sure hope I am wrong, but let me know if you need more help

New impeller installed.  Pumping water again.

                Thanks for the replies.

                Sincerely,

                Doug

What was the issue with the original impeller? Did the rubber bond fail between the hub and rubber veins?

                    Fleetwin,

2 of the veins were broken off.  The bond between the hub and rubber was intact.

It would only pump at high rpms.

Hope you found the missing pieces so they don’t get plugged somewhere down the line in the future.
