I’m working on trying to get this 85 Evinrude Yachtwin (Model E8SRLCOB) 8 HP back together so I can move it out of my garage and the magneto is presenting an interesting problem/repair. One I’ve never had to deal with.

The plastic adjustable piece (believe it’s the cam follower) that the roller for the throttle runs on has broken at the "Flex" point as this part is adjustable to adjust the wide open throttle position. My question is has anyone attempted to repair this before as the part is (Of course) NLA! I was not able to find anything helpful on eBay so I’m thinking some fabrication will be called for. This plastic follower is riveted to the plate that the mag screws to which is on the underside of the base ring which screws directly to the powerhead.

I’ll try and get some photos up later this evening so you can see what I’m dealing with.

      Thanks in advance.

Okay, here are some photos of the part I’m talking about. Mumbles, I knew I got the part name wrong, that follower is fine, it’s the part on the mag that advances it that’s broken. See pics. Might have to get creative!

Oh, THAT part. Looks like it’s riveted together and comes as an assembly.

Maybe some crazy glue to hold it together and a buildup with epoxy on both sides to reinforce it?

Try placing an ad on the Free Classified section here. There has to be one of those out there somewhere!

According to the parts book, the p/n is 393735 retainer and link assembly. The part is NLA. I have checked my parts inventory and do not have one.

If it were me, I would center the broken part back as close to where it belongs as possible, hold it centered with a spring clamp or the like, and drill and tap it for a flat head screw, as close to the break point as possible. Finish with a file, to smooth up. I mean, other than finding the correct part someplace, what do you have to loose?

have you tried crazy gluing the parts back together and once hardened up drill a 1/16 or 3/32 hole between parts then…..insert a pin (metallic) peg (brass pin) with crazy glue or some epoxy. seems broken at a flex junction…it it needs to flex a bit… the brass pin would help

if it is made of polypropylene it is hard to glue but few choices are available to you. I have seen new glues by JB weld to fix plastic car bumper plastics… maybe that could do it

Looking at the parts diagram on boats.net, the adjustable cam you have was not used until 1986. The 1985 parts show a fixed cam – I have one of the fixed style ones that you can have. I see you are in MA, and as it turns out I will be in Boston on Mar 30 for a while. You close to Boston? If so you could collect if you want this style cam. I do note that this part for the 8hp is different to the one for the 6hp one – and I do not know for sure which one I have, but you are welcome to it if you want it. Do not see a part number or any other marking on it to determine which hp it was for.

Thanks for all the input and yes I never found anything and don’t give up easy on fixing things. Dad ended up helping me "Pin" it and glue it back on so we’re letting it set overnight and will inspect it tomorrow. Likely will skim coat around it as well to give it another layer and then reshape the contour by hand. I’ll post some pics once the repair is complete.

                        Thanks again everyone!
