Asking for a buddy. Told him my newest motor is a 1966 but wanted to ask you guys because I know some of you (most) will know the answer.
He wants to change the lubricant in his gear case. Will the 80-90w stuff we use in our old gear cases work ok? Also is the drain/fill procedure the same? 2 screws and refill from the bottom until it comes out the top hole?

He bought a synthetic valvoline product  (75-90w) but it doesn’t say it’s made for marine use. Would that stuff be ok or should he make sure he gets the “marine use” type?

      thanks guys!

Although I don’t know much about 80-90w oil your talking about I’m sure it would work fine. I personally would use any major outboard manufacturers Hypoid 90 gear oil…it has additives to help with water intrusion. OMC,Mercury,Yamaha,Suzuki,Sierra..they all make a good gear oil. Mercury even sells their synthetic blend gear oil. I have used the Sierra gear oils for years with great results. And yes…same filling proceedures…fill from bottom to top vent hole.
