      Hi,

I’m working on a friend’s 1986 (first model year) 9.9 Mercury where the tiller took a big hit and what is called the tiller’s "swivel Bracket", or "Swivel Tube" is broken. Online dealers say the part is discontinued, replaced by part number 42213A14, and it’s expensive!
It’s part #3 in this view:

Is this newer Mercury replacement part more robust? ….making it worth $134.00 for the new part? ….or is it just an updated part number for the same old part? If there is no significant improvement in the part, I will look for a used one or an entire used tiller. This is one of those tillers with the gearshift integrated with the twist-throttle handle.

Also – I can’t find any good way to get a wrench on the locknut that mounts the tiller by threading onto the above part – looks like the easiest way is to separate the motor from the steering pivot tube. Any thoughts on the easiest way to get that nut off and on the new part?
      Thx,
      Dave

For the big nut, I jam a screw driver down between the housing and a flat of the big nut, pull the tiller down, take out the driver, lift the tiller up, jam the driver in again, pull the tiller down….like you’re human ratchet, until the nut is off. A pain but it works better than you might think.

        Long live American manufacturing!

Yeah – that’s how I loosened it a couple turns to see the casting threading into it was cracked. I was hoping there was a better way, but I can live with that.
