I’m working on a 25ELCUA 1987 Johnson for a friend. The carb’s electric primer pump is not working. Turning the red lever to "manual choke" position does work so gas is getting to and through it. When I jumper battery + directly to the pump’s positive terminal, it clicks indicating the solenoid is actuating something, but no gas spurts out the priming tube. I found an exploded view at the site below. Are there certain parts inside, like the springs that are known to go bad? The pump is at his house so I can’t take it apart and inspect right now.

July 10, 2016 at 2:33 pm #39972Okay, let’s back up a bit. The primer isn’t a pump – it’s a valve. It only allows fuel through when it is activated and either the primer bulb is squeezed, or the motor is turning over (fuel pump pumping). Simply activating it with no fuel pressure present won’t do anything. Test it under those conditions and let us know what you find.
July 10, 2016 at 4:38 pm #39977Listen to Scott, that electric primer is misunderstood, not a pump, just a valve, nothing will happen with no fuel pressure (simply pump up the fuel bulb). These pumps are fairly robust, usually don’t break unless someone takes it apart an mis-assembles it. The only other thing that might ruin it is if somehow it gets stuck in the electric "on" position for a long period of time, but you say it "clicks" when wired directly, so this seems unlikely as well. Does it "click" when activated with the key switch?
One other area that is often overlooked while troubleshooting is the brass fitting on top of the carb. The typical diagnosis is pulling the hose and looking for fuel to squirt out of the hose. Keep in mind that the brass nipple can get plugged with crud causing the primer not to work as well. Put some WD40 in a syringe, then squirt it through the rubber hose while it is connected to the brass nipple to see if that is plugged up….July 10, 2016 at 5:27 pm #39980Thanks guys, I did not think to try it with gas pressure in the lines, at the time I was troubleshooting, I assumed it was a small electric motorized pump. When I got home and found the exploded view, I realized it was a solenoid.

It does click when activated.
I think I may have checked it while cranking, but not sure.
DaveJuly 11, 2016 at 10:06 pm #40028I don’t get to look into this problem further – my friend sold the motor and pontoon in an as-is condition after telling the buyer what was and wasn’t working right and running the motor for him, and dropping the price a bit. It also had a leaky float bowl gasket.
Thanks again for the info – I’ll know on the next one.
