My 89 Merc 40 HP is difficult to start after setting. I have to pump the primer bulb to start it after only 10-15 min of setting? Is there a check valve or something to hold the fuel?

Well, no merc guy is replying so I will chime in. Are you saying the engine will start OK hot after sitting if you pump up the primer bulb? If so, I would just primer the bulb before starting hot to avoid excessive cranking. It is not uncommon to have to choke a hot engine after it sets for awhile, especially in hot weather, this is referred to as "heat soak" or "vapor lock".

Choke doesent seem to help start it. Saturday I forgot to open the air vent on the gas tank, the motor started fine all day. When I was getting ready to go out Sunday I noticed that the vent wasn’t open ( plastic gas tank nearly flat) I opened the vent on the tank, and my starting (after setting)troubles returned. That’s why I thought maybe there was a check valve or something. This may seem like a minor thing but this is a pontoon boat and its difficult to reach the primer bulb. Thanks for your help Jim

OK, well that’s an interesting symptom. Motor starts and runs OK with the vent closed on the fuel tank??
This engine has a great fuel pump! The plastic tank is collapsing so that would seem to rule out most air leak situations.
Does the engine run OK once it is started? I’m assuming this engine has a carb, again, I’m not a merc guy.
Perhaps the carb is flooding over slightly when you shut the engine down causing it to be to restart hot.. You could try pulling the fuel line and letting the engine run out of fuel when hot instead of shutting it off with the key. Let the engine sit a bit like you normally do, then reconnect and pump up the fuel line. Carb flooding should be considered if the engine starts OK now.
PS- I guess I never answered your question about some sort of one way valve in your fuel tank. Some tanks/fuel systems have some sort of valve set up, some don’t, kinda hard to say.

Yes the motor runs great once started. I try your suggestion this weekend. I am also going to try a new hose and bulb.
