The soundproofing foam on the inside my hood is disintegrating and making a mess inside the hood.
So I ripped it out and what’s left is the adhesive that was used to secure the foam.
Do you have any suggestions in regards re sound proofing the cowl?
If the suggestion is a spray .Would I be able to spray over the old adhesive?
Or is some kind of foam material the way to go?

I figured out that acetone gets off the adhesive

I think a 1/2" to 1" thick foam rubber might work well if you can find some somewhere. Maybe some spray-on adhesive or rubber adhesive of some kind to bind it inside your hood, after you pre-make the foam inserts. Then I was thinking about some spray on sealer type spray over the foam rubber that hardens so that when the foam gets old it won’t start deteriorating and sucking down your carb or making a mess inside the cowl and pan. I hate it when the stuff gets all over everything in there.

Never done this before, just throwing out ideas.

          Good luck!

Though not original, I used some of this recently on a Mercury 7.5hp. It did a great job quieting things down. Time will tell how it holds up but it is cheap and I have a lot left for other noisy motors.

IMO I would be concerned about the self adhesive staying put

For what it’s worth, just make sure whatever you go with isn’t going to shake loose or simply fall off anytime soon. Any of that gets sucked into the manifold and you’ll have a fun time of pulling off the manifold and cleaning everything.

After sleeping on it I decided I did not like the idea of "Boom Mat Spray" because of possible faking at a later point and getting into the carb
So just out of curiosity I wrote Dynamic about their product "Xtreme" which is a blanket
This is what I received from the company
                        Dear Al,

Thank you for your interest in our products.

The Xtreme will work on the outboard engine cover and will never come loose as long as the temperature does not exceed 300 degrees F.

We also recommend to install our Hoodliner foam over the Xtreme if clearances will allow.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

                        Best regards,

Now I’m leaning toward " Xtreme "but with out "Hoodliner"
I really don’t know the temperature with in the hood when the engine is running but
If a thermostat gets activated at around 125 degrees and the self adhesive can with stand temperature of 300 degrees
I would think all would be well
                        Do you have an opinion?
