I Pulled the cylinder looking for something broke. Found steel chips in the crankcase. Rings, cylinder walls, and piston look good to me. Should the con rod cap have nuts opposite the screws?

No nuts, the rod cap is threaded. The rod cap bolt has a hole drilled through the end of each bolt so safety wire can be attached between the ends. That way it cannot back out. I use Loctite red to give it extra locking power.

Take a closer look around the edges
of the ports in the cylinder.

A "Boathouse Repair" is one thats done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

Thanks all; Ports look OK but I’ll give them a light sanding. Cotter pins were in the con rod cap screws. One fell out and that must be the chips I found. Crank journal and inside con rod looks good. Should I use new cotter pins when I reassemble? I could slip a washer in first for a snug fit. Using wire looks difficult. Sorry, don’t know why pics are blurry.

ABSOLUTELY use new cotter pins. I guarantee the one that broke had been reused or re-adjusted after being installed. I would replace all of them with new ones, . . 😉
