Getting ready to convert this gearcase to a longshaft.Having the driveshaft out and water pump removed, i looked down through the hole where the driveshaft goes to the pinion. The gear case has lube in it, i could see the lube level is to near the top of the pinion bearing. 2 -3 inches above that is the driveshaft bearing. How does the driveshaft bearing get lubed as it is well above the gear lube level and also above the pinion bearing, that would block any splash up to where the top bearing is. My driveshaft bearing looks dry with slight pitting, but kinda hard to see it real well.
      Thanks, Jim PSB

When the gearcase is filled to the proper level, the gears will act as a pump and move the oil up towards the bearing. If you look closely at a 5.5 horse case for instance, you can see an opening in the casting for the oil to come thru. I don’t have a 25 handy to look at but I’m sure it’s similar.

What year is the motor? Earlier ones had a bushing while later ones had a Torrington needle bearing below the water pump.

The gear case is off a 1981Johnson 25 hp RCIM. It has a needle bearing about 1.5 " below the bottom of the upper driveshaft seals. I have not had this motor running for quite some time, and then it was just barrel run, so no wonder the bearing is dry.
