Anybody know of any info links to defining rattles in 2 strokes or maybe someone has some experience with 2 stroke noises at certain rpm’s? I know and enjoy the 2 stroke rattle but never quantified the rattle as to rod..piston..pin with respect to rpm. Might help one when testing a possible motor purchase.
It just seems no matter how new or tight a 2 stroke motor is it still rattles…
July 7, 2016 at 3:21 am #39773Older two-strokes with friction or sleeve type bearings are generally quieter than needle/roller bearing equipped motors. It’s just the nature of the beasts. This is why I like smaller motors from the fifties as they are so quiet when they are in good condition. Worn pistons and cylinders in either type of motor will get your attention with the piston slap noise though.
July 7, 2016 at 3:35 am #39774Yea, now that you mention it..I had a Martin 40 like in 1974 or so that was quiet..
I’m particularly interested in needle bearing wrist pin noise..
July 7, 2016 at 11:19 am #39785Roller bearings are noisy by nature. They need a tiny bit of clearance to survive, and they do not have the large sheet of oil between them and the shaft. Plus, most OMC motors have a considerable amount of piston slap due to the pistons being tapered by design. If you suspect looseness in the bearings, remove the spark plugs and stick a screwdriver in the hole to follow the piston on the downstroke as you slowly rotate the flywheel. Stop rotating at about midstroke and give a push on the screwdriver. Looseness will show up as a clunk.
Actually, roller bearings do not wear in the normal sense. But they do experience damage from water ingestion. Then they make an unmistakable sound that I describe as like an old steel roller skate wheel on the sidewalk. That is if anybody remembers those old roller skates.
July 8, 2016 at 3:01 am #39847Around 1975 or so I used to resurrect dead sno sleds. Had one that the crank rusted pretty bad. Just did gaskets and seals and I ran the hell out of it for a couple of seasons. Sold it and bought another carkus to save. Made that rolling noise real loud.
Real long story short..rebuilt 2cyl motor. Out of 7 rods I acquired various ways only 2 were not bent or kinked. One from 76′ motor and one newer style rod were good. New pistons used larger pin. Press out old bearing with outer race to use with larger pin. New bearing and pin but with generous clearance on the unused small end race. Other rod newer style was tighter at the pin even though it was run on.
Just curious if I could hear the loose one rattle….
