After disassembling the LU, I found that the large brass cup nut in the gear assembly is cleanly broken around the bottom. Took some pressure to do that! A machinist/welder says it can be nicely welded. (We’ll see) The shock adsorber spring is also broken in the middle & appears it’s been that way for years before this motor was put up. Two questions:1). Assuming I either find another one or this one can be repaired, how tight does this nut get tightened? Once tightened, what keeps it that way? There is a round hole where the threads are, but it’s obvious it’s never been threaded for a set screw, etc…..#2). The spring. Not ideal of course, but can I still use it (it’s still springy) or search for a stout spring of similar size? I’ll hit the classifieds, but I’m not holding my breath. Thanks for any help/suggestions.
February 6, 2017 at 5:09 am #52499Tighten the cup until it stops (its threads will bottom out on the gear threads). This will compress the heavy spring somewhat. The spring needs to be one-piece. The face of the cup must be flat and not bulged outwards. { You can do a temporary test by threading the cup on the gear without the spring in place just to see how far it goes – it will stop where it should.}
If water gets into the brass cup or cone, it may freeze, destroying the cup by bulging or breaking it.
The hole in the edge of the cup is for tightening the cup with a spanner type wrench with a pin on the end. It needs to be of the correct matching curvature. (I use a large channellock pliers placed in the right direction so it doesn’t slip.)
A used one can be found on these models: K50, K65, K70, K75, K80, KA37
If you braze the old one, you might do so while the cup is screwed onto the gear to prevent distortion.February 6, 2017 at 5:43 am #52502February 7, 2017 at 1:33 am #52554Anonymous
Thanks to everyone for all the assistance and advice. This is my first brush with outboards and really any boating at all! Bought an old 13.5′ mahogany outboard & trailer just to mess with. Ended up being a 30’s Welch Bros (started The Century Boat Co.) outboard and original trailer. Should have stayed with old cars and Airstreams!
