I bought a nice 35hp Johnson Javelin…runs pretty good….but I don’t know how to stop it! Of course it has electric start and a generator. The dash has two buttons: one for start, one for choke. I thought I saw where you push the choke button in….but it won’t stop it…..I need a quick reply as it’s still running! ( just kidding!)

I kill mine with the electric choke.

Well, does the choke button work? Watch the motor to see if it is functioning as it should, and closing completely. Try manually pulling the choke if not.

If it is functioning, and still not killing it, how high is the idle set? Perhaps much too high. How does it run on the water as it sits? What is the low speed needle set at? Perhaps a bit lean.

            Three things to check.
            1. Idle RPM. You don’t want this too high for gearcase longevity issues if nothing else.
            2. Does the manual choke shut it off effectively
            3. If the manual choke shuts if off okay then adjust the throw on the electric choke solenoid to where it closes the choke blade.

Thanks for the advice guys…I’ll try these suggestions…idle maybe too high and running lean…but I think the main message: you choke it to kill it…

It sounds like some of your wiring is not hooked up. You need ground leads hooked to your mags, to ground them out in the off position.

The 1957 Javelin does not have that wiring configuration Zephyr. It didn’t have a stop button, or key switch. It used the choke to stop.

I mean, you could add that if you want, but the only wiring going to mag plate was 1 black lead from the top post of the cutout switch to prevent a runaway situation in neutral.

I always add a second mag lead so I can kill the motor remotely. Of course, that means switching out the internal wiring harness for a 1958 and newer harness.

So that feature didn’t start till ’58 then? Good to know.

So the other alternative is to take your throttle stop out, to allow you to bring the throttle all the way down?
