I saved this from the "chopper" today. It’s seized so I’m trying to drop the lower unit. It came down four inches and stopped. I removed the neutral shift rod nuts but still won’t come down anymore. What am I missing?

Usually pulling the hairpin clip 203040 in the bottom clutch adjusting nut 203039 behind the exhaust outlet will allow the lower unit to drop off. No need to undo the locknut and disturb the length adjustment. There was a change in the clutch mechanism between serial number 70,000 and 70,001. Later models had a more positive disconnect.

Thanks Gary; There must be a lot of carbon and rust on the driveshaft stopping it to fit through the pump body.

            Good point and probably correct.

The pump body and stainless steel plate above it should come off with the gear case. It is held in place by the spring plate underneath it. There is sometimes corrosion around the stainless steel that sticks it in place. Be sure all projections line up with there corresponding notches on re-assembly. Always use a rich fuel mix. (A quart of oil to 4 gallons of gas) That model has all bronze bushings and the crankshaft counter weight on the top cylinder tends to rob oil from the top connecting rod.

The pump body came loose so now I’ll soak the cylinders for a week and see what happens. The lower unit is also seized, may need a gearset. We’ll see if the powerhead gets loose and is OK. It also needs a recoil and gas cap. If I get lucky I’ll throw some $$ at it. I like the fact that it’s lighter than my "55. Thanks Gary.

Ill assume the screwdriver (tiller grip) is seized as well! Careful trying to free it, the grips crack easily.
