Does anyone know what one could have expended as far as compression readings are concerned from a late 40’s Champion 4K (7.9 hp, 2 cylinder) when it was new, when it was "broken in" but still in good running condition and then what you’d expect the minimum would be for that engine to operate properly?
Hoping some old "Champion fans" might have some information on that.
OK. Had an older power head on the 4K. Finally found a compression meter that I could screw in. It had 70-75 psi absolutely cold with no oil squirted in or anything. I’d purchased another power head on eBay a couple of years ago and just turning it by hand by the shaft that the fly wheel is supposed to sit on I could tell it had pretty good compression…I hoped better than the one on the machine. So I switched them out, grabbed the compression meter and with this second head not having been run for years it gave a 90+ psi reading. Bingo! I’ve run it now a few times on the lake and it runs well. I’ve not been able to run this motor this slowly with the other head(s) I’ve had on this lower unit. I’m running some Sea Foam in the gas mix to clean it all up. So far, so good.
