I’m going to look at a late fifties Evinrude which has had the block replaced with a NOS thermostat block.  They have used the early exhaust cover and head.  Of course the water passages don’t line up and one is open on the cover side.  I am pretty sure that this won’t work, am I right or wrong?

If its a 35hp Engine it won’t work.  There is a return tube coning from the power head back down to the water pump to recirculate the water until it reaches 150°F where then the thermostat redirects the water to exit out a port on the mid section.

I’m confused here..  So someone is trying to replace a pre 59 5.5hp block (no thermostat), with a 59 or later block with a thermostat?  If so, this isn’t gonna work for a few more reasons.  Nonetheless, the older exhaust cover will surely not fit on the 59 and later powerhead, but it seems that you know this already so I’m not sure I understand what you are asking about….
