50’s Johnson 5 1/2 exhaust cover

I may go and look at this motor. Should the heat discoloration be a concern?

Nope. Standard on 5.5’s. The exhaust is not water cooled like the later 7.5’s.

That paint burned during the first five minutes of running right out of the box. Smelled awful too!

Isn’t it a simple "upgrade" to add the stainless liner plate from a later 5 1/2 inside the exhaust cover?

Yes, the SS inner plate could be added, but it isn’t necessary, the hot exhaust cover won’t bother anything.
