I’m breaking this out from the post earlier so I don’t hijack that thread.
I’ve got a ’52 fleetwin that had a locked lower unit. I’ve opened it and cleaned it and de-rusted the "dog"? that locks it into the big spring. I found part of a small wire clip that appears to hold the dog up when not engaged. It’s been snapped and I’m hoping to make one from music wire. The more I look online the more I get confused. Folks talk about annealing steal and hardened and quenching. Has anyone made one of these before from just plain music wire without the extra steps? Will music wire be strong enough – what’s left of the existing spring is quite stiff.
In looking at the schematics for the lower unit the part 203117 is the clip but nothing like the oneon mine. Could this LU be from another year? Did they make a neutral-forward units other than 51-52?
I made one for my Fleetwin. I took a small coil spring pulled it straight. Then I bent it in a arc and bent the end to catch in a notch. The clutch worked fine and I use the motor once. There were two clutch types one with a spring and the second model the shift rod fit in a notch for positive shift.
DanK , it is not necessary to heat treat a spring that has been made from music wire. That is assuming that you formed the spring without heating the wire in the first place. Be sure to use the same gage wire as the original spring if you expect the same "strength" part.
