      Gentlemen –
I am working on a ’53 Mercury mark 7. All going well – until I tried to remove the fuel filter and related gaskets there. I got the large hex nut inside the upper cowl to move, but it seems to be held in place by a nut inside the gas tank – I can see that spinning freely when I look into the tank with a flashlight. Am I not understanding how this comes apart, or missing some special tool to remove and then replace this nut again?? Any advice much appreciated –

take the tank off the rim. loosen the large hex nut then pull the filter assy. out. the filter may be swollen and might be tight. anyway it will need replacing so don’t worry about damaging it.

the filter element is held in place on the nut by a stud and nut. oldmercs, com has a newer element.

I got a vise grip on it and of course it came right out. Thank you Betty Ann –

good job. I usually put the hex in a vise and turn the tank, works most of the time.
