Hello, I am new to this forum and would like to ask a question. First a little about my self, I love to restore things and bring them back to life. I have done 2 old Mopars, several Honda mini bikes and now I am into old Evinrudes. It started last summer when our oldest son bought a 12′ row boat to use on the Grandparents pond. It came with a 56 Lightwin that was froze up. We freed it up and went through it and it purrs like a kitten. Well that wasn’t enough power so I found a 56 Fleetwin and a 56 Sportwin and redid them both. Then the boat wasn’t big enough, so we found a 78 Sea Nymph 14R Big Water. We completely redid it also painted it, put decks and floors in it with new seating. Now he can use it on the lake to fish. So now we need more power. I found a 57 Fastwin 18hp Electric Start, this is going to be the main motor for his 14′ boat, I am currently redoing it. I got it in a package deal with a 53 Big Twin 25hp with the original Simplex controls. We were going to just sell the 25 but we cleaned the carb and the points last Sunday and it fired right up after setting for many years. Well, now I have to redo this one also. It has a long shaft kit on it, so here is my question. Do I have to remove the power head to remove the lower unit? Any help would be appreciated. Like all the other ones I have done, it will get completely disassembled and clean, new lower unit seal kit, impeller, carb kit and points. Thanks Scott.

No you do not have to remove the powerhead. I believe you will find the shift rod connector when you drop the lower unit down a bit.

Thanks for your help everyone. I got the lower unit off, it was a piece of cake. Now to get a short shaft for it and try it out.

Nice thing about the 51 – 54 Big Twin and RD, is you don’t have to fumble with a water tube. However, the water passages are integrated in the seam where the lower unit connects to the midsection, so applying a thin coat of 3m 847 or another sealer, will minimize possible water leakage there.
