Steve,
I don’t have a bad shoulder (yet), I just don’t like that older style recoil. I like the feel of the “Eas-A-Matic” Starter better. It’s smoother, quieter, feels tighter, less moving parts, etc.
Not sure how the 15 is, but on the ’55 Johnson 10 HP there isn’t a rear mount in the right position for the elliptical recoil. So I drill through the rear leg of the recoil and use 1″ x 1/8″ aluminum angle and 1/4 x 20 screw and nut to attach it. Bottom side of the angle bracket needs to be a little shorter, about 7/8″ to allow for flywheel clearance.
For the 10 I use a flywheel and starter from ’56-’57, and brackets and silencer from ’56-’58. I think in your case for the 15, brackets and silencer from 15 or 18 HP ’56 to ’58, and recoil and flywheel from 15 and 18 HP, ’56 and up. I’ve done it on a couple 10s and it’s worked fine through hundreds of pulls. Purists might not like it, but I do. And for someone with a bad shoulder it just might make things a little easier.
