I’m little baffled .Any of you Elgin guys ,does it take grease or oil? There is only one plug above gear case nothing lower or above ? don’t want to run on lake without proper lubricant

Book says Elgin Waterproof. I would assume that means grease. Sorry, I don’t know the answer about the grease plugs. They must be there somewhere (??)

elginoutboards.org says if no plugs, remove the bearing carrier. Seems odd, but

I’m working on one of these mean green machines right now! Mine’s a ’52 and there are both drain and fill plugs. The drain/fill is on the top of the trailing edge of the skeg, the vent on the starboard side in the typical place. Here’s a photo I took showing the gears, in the shot you can just see the brass drain/fill in the upper left:

Use Lubriplate 105, John Deere Corn Head, or if you have the nice old waxy underwater grease, use it!

I’m working on a page about them for my website – it’s still in draft form and by no means complete, but if it is of help to you here’s the link: http://www.oddjobmotors.com/elgin-16.htm

Let me know how you make out with running it – looking forward to trying mine soon.

Excellent article Art! That drive shaft coupler reminds me of working on the large 150 Force outboard’s of the early 90s. It allowed the drive shaft to wobble around while trying to install the lower unit, and makes it very difficult to get the driveshaft aligned with the crank shaft splines… I have cussed at those motors many times while trying to do a simple water pump job! Now that I’ve got into some of the bigger West Bend engines, it’s remarkable how much the modern day Force outboards share many of the same designs as their West bend ancestors. That being said, I’d like to find one of the 16 Elgin’s to add to my collection!

Thanks for info. . I had it running other day it amazed me how low I could get it to idol . it ran very smooth .. I did pull the bearing carrier cleaned and filled with 105 lubriplate . I had success putting a fuel pump together made gaskets and had material to make diaphragm worked real good . Now comes the part of cleaning sanding and paint. I understand seaside green and hunter green are the colors . What goes where dark on top cover and light green for rest ?? any one know

By the way Art I went by Peter Hunt book and got J12J spark plugs . I thought they had a long protrusion . so I turned over by hand with flywheel piston hit plug . Took out got J11c plugs worked fine . Just be advised it can create problems
