I have had an E mail to Garry for 3 weeks now to both Florida & Michigan without a repy, I’m sad he didn’t reply! I knew he was writing a book a long time ago.

      Miss his photos too!

Drop the gearcase & try manually try moving the shift shaft to see if you get F,N,& R before taking it apart. Did you install with gearcase & shift lever both in forward gear & be sure to remove the set screw on the coupling all the way to see  it seats properly.

I had a 54 Evinrude Superfastwin & it’s proberly  the  same design as my 15hp, loved that motor, always ran very well!

I had the shift lever in reverse because I was told it dropped the linkage more to be able to get to the coupler. I didn’t however make sure the gear case was in reverse. That is probably my problem. Mine is a big twin 25hp. Also is there a trick to get to the coupler screw  With everything hooked up? When I initially tried to get it into the coupler  the gear case was to close to the exhaust housing to be able to get to it. That’s when I was told to put it in reverse. But at that time I had the power head off the engine and was able to push the shift shaft down a little more to get it to coupler bolt. They definitely are seated properly tho because that was also something I fought so I made sure before I put the cases together and put the power head back on.

OK, I’m guessing you have the shift rod linkage improperly connected, although I’m not really familiar with how it connects on that engine.  There is also a very fine linkage adjustment on the shift handle that may have to be adjusted as well.  (At least I think there is, but perhaps not on this older model).  One thing is for sure, please make sure the shift system is adjusted properly, or else you will create shifting problems that will result in clutch dog/gear lug wear.

Did you have this gearcase all apart?  If so, you may want to remove it again (don’t disassemble it), to check shifting.
