I am trying to separate the crankcase halves my 25 HP Evinrude to reseal them. Removed the power head from the leg, removed rewind, carb and inlet valve plate. Then removed the 4 large bolts and 8 smaller ones at the crankcase separation. Also removed the two Allen bolts behind the valve plate. Bumped with a wood block and hammer at the case halves but it has not separated.
I don’t want to hit too hard and do damage. Does anyone have advice on getting these separated? Also I see on the valve plate that one of the rubber pressure check valves is maybe .020 inch above its seat. Should I replace the check valve?
Thanks for any advice.
February 5, 2016 at 4:55 pm #31401You will find two crankcase alignment pins, one at the top, the other at the bottom. These pins must be removed before the crankcase can be split.
The pins are tapered, so proper procedures must be followed to avoid damaging the pins and crankcase. The narrow end of the pins face the cylinder head, the larger end of the pins face the intake manifold. These pins should have been removed prior to removing the crankcase bolts, so reinstall (just snug them up) the two upper and two lower crankcase bolts before driving the pins out. Using a small punch drive the pins out hitting them on the cylinder head side toward the intake manifold side of the crankcase/block.
Once the pins are out, remove the crankcase bolts, please recheck to make sure you have them ALL out. Now, using a large plastic or rubber hammer, tap the crankshaft toward the intake manifold side of the block. The crankcase should split apart easily, stop and recheck if it does not. Never pry or use a chisel to separate the crankcase halves.
Feel free to post pictures if you continue to have difficulties.February 5, 2016 at 5:36 pm #31405I should have mentioned that I already had the pins out. I hit the top taper area of the crankshaft with a rubber hammer a couple of fairly hard whacks but halves did not open. I have photos but photobucket is inaccessible to me right now. I will try to send by PM.
February 5, 2016 at 5:48 pm #31407No, Photobucket is "down for maintenance". I will try again later. Thanks for your advice.
February 5, 2016 at 6:07 pm #31408you can email the pics to me, will try to post them here for you.

be sure to put Evinrude in the header so I know it isn’t spamFebruary 5, 2016 at 7:12 pm #31409Have you removed the reed valve plate? There are 2 bolts behind it holding crankcase together
February 5, 2016 at 7:50 pm #31410Yes, I took the two Allen head bolts out behind the valve plate, thanks.
February 5, 2016 at 7:56 pm #31411February 6, 2016 at 12:09 am #31433It should come off. A whack on the crankshaft as previously described should do it. A careful pry between two stout bosses is ok if you use good judgement. You know when you are in danger of breaking something–it shouldn’t be hard to separate. NEVER jam anything into the parting seam.
February 6, 2016 at 12:15 am #31437Probably just the sealer holding her together now.
