Quick question. When reassembling the gear case, with it upside down on my bench and the propeller threads close to me, which side of the propeller shaft does the lower shift rod go? Left or right?
      Thanks,
      Bob D

Did you have the shift fork off the lower shift rod? If not, the lower shift rod will only fit in properly in one direction because the shift fork won’t be oriented correctly…. The smaller motors have the detent spring for the shift rod making this question easier to answer… So now I’m wondering if the shift rod will “fit” with the offset oriented in either direction…..

Yes Don the shift fork and the lower shift rod are unassembled.
          The are both new.

Think I can now answer my own question. Tried both ways. On this particular model engine it seems to work better when the lower shift rod placed on the left (with the prop threads close to you).
Works smoother with less binding. Was just confused because looking on the internet I have seen OMC ‘s with them on both sides.

A good question/topic for sure…Be sure to confirm the orientation before reassembly, you sure don’t want to pull it apart again….Wish I had one apart in the basement….
