Here’s some pics of this engine I just picked up.
      Questions to follow……
It’s an album of pics, can’t seem to directly link from prime to here.

Nice motor? It looks very clean. I suggest you buy the Mercury factory service manual if you don’t already have it. I’m a big fan of the 35-50 hp 4 cyl Mercs.

Thats one of my questions actually…
What’s the best manual for this?
          Thanks,
          John

You want the FACTORY service manual for 1965 & prior.

                  Thanks all,
I’m in need of some info on this engine….
                  Best manual(s) to get?
                  Anyone try those downloadable ones?
What style fuel tank to be period correct am I looking for?
Engine says Cedarsburg on the tag, assuming tank and controls should be the same?
                  I know, I know……being a little anally retentive here!!
Everting on this Lyman boat, Tee Nee trailer, and now the engine, is stamped 1955, I want to keep it that way.
                  Thanks,
                  John

As stated above, spring for the OEM manual, 1965 & Prior, part number C-90-25500.

Your "correct" fuel tank – I believe the 1955 6-gallon tanks had a hard-wired hose with no twist-connect fitting on the tank. Pretty sure by 1956 they had the twist-connect feature. Either will function just fine. It should have the shield logo on it, too, not the oval style…

55 may still have had some duel line tanks converted to single line. like in the pic.

John, does the mark 55 have a fuel pump or not? If not, you’ll need to install one or find a pressure tank.

An OMC tank can be used with a Mercury fitting.
