I have been tinkering with a 5516 Evinrude 5.5 hp and noticed when reattaching the LU that not all the parts were present on the drive shaft when I took it apart. Part number 0303391 the seal was not there. The cup washer was there, then the spring, then the driveshaft to crankcase plate and gasket.
I am going to order a new seal. My question is, was there some damage that likely occurred because the seal was not replaced at some point in the past? Or is this going to be one of the "try it and see" things?
June 30, 2016 at 7:33 pm #39314So, the carbon seal and little oring were missing, correct? Unfortunately, when the lower seal is damaged/missing, the end result is a bit of water getting pumped through the engine which usually affects the connecting rod bushings more than anything else.
Deciding what to do now is a judgement call. Did you have the engine running before doing the work? If so, how did it sound? Generally speaking, you would expect to hear some rod noise if there is damage/wear, but this is not always the case. I’m assuming the compression is OK/even though.
Is this engine in real nice cosmetic condition? I guess there is no way of knowing how long the engine was run with the missing seal pieces.
So, I’m thinking, if it were me, I would probably run it (16:1) and see how it sounds. Just keep your ears tuned for any excess engine noise in the future.
PS-Don’t forget the 303347 oring that fits inside the carbon seal…June 30, 2016 at 8:15 pm #39317Fleetwin, exactly, the carbon seal and o ring were not there. It had even compression. I think in the low 80s. I didn’t think much about it after the cylinders checked out evenly. I haven’t really had the motor running yet. It is a recent purchase and I have gone through usual things to get spark and only started it for a couple seconds with gas squirted in the carb throat as I do not have a suitable tank for this motor yet. I didn’t hear anything that sounded weird but I have no experience to fall back on.
Cosmetically it isn’t anything to get excited about. I wouldn’t call it pretty but it does seem to be all there.
I was guessing it might be a try it and see deal. 16:1 and no long trips. LOL

June 30, 2016 at 8:40 pm #39320Thanks Mumbles. I checked my workbench and my coffee can for this motor. No seal and no old O ring. I bought at new gasket and O ring when I ordered a new impeller as I supposed those needed replacing as a matter of course. I will pay closer attention next time.
June 30, 2016 at 9:50 pm #39322It is suggested that you glue the 303355 gasket to the plate to prevent the plate from spinning.
June 30, 2016 at 10:19 pm #39325Any particular type of glue?
July 1, 2016 at 12:40 am #39330Not all that high-tech. Original was Sealer 1000, now called Scotchgrip 847. But most any hardening type gasket cement that is fuel-proof.
July 15, 2016 at 7:01 pm #40269I got the 58 Evinrude running this morning. It didn’t do too bad. One weird thing though. It will pump water fine at idle and low to mid range rpms but when I revved it up a little the water slowed down to a trickle. I expected the opposite. If I shut it down and start it right back up it pumps again normally. I am hoping that it has something to do with being run in the barrel, maybe sucking up air and losing its prime. Kinda hoping I don’t have to pull it apart again to check the impeller key.

I must have goofed something. It isn’t really pumping that great now that I look at the video. Maybe I pinched the grommet or something.
