Most likely a barrel issue, water is getting mixed with air, try it on the boat….
The spray does change a bit when transitioning from low to high speeds though….July 15, 2016 at 7:23 pm #40274quote Bullie:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9Yc1HVyNP0I must have goofed something. It isn’t really pumping that great now that I look at the video. Maybe I pinched the grommet or something.
Just watched the video, yeah the spray does seem a little weak, but this stuff can be hard to judge….Especially on these older 5.5s with the exhaust manifold that is not water cooled.
You might still want to try it on the boat before ripping it all apart again…July 15, 2016 at 7:25 pm #40275Hoping you are right fleetwin. Maybe I will have a chance to give her a short spin on a boat soon.
July 15, 2016 at 10:15 pm #40284I think is a safe bet. Make sure you put sealer under the wear plate too, because if it’s not sealed correctly, that issue will be there.
August 9, 2016 at 2:01 am #41810I took the little 58 out this evening. It ran pretty good and seemed to be pumping water ok at all speeds. It didn’t stop like it did in the barrel. I have to get some new packing washers in the carb but when I could keep the needles from spinning it ran and idled down nice. It is really ugly sitting next to the little 55 Johnson though.
August 9, 2016 at 3:51 am #41821these motors need water above the water pump level to pump well.
Doug
how is it motors multiply when the garage lights get
turned off?August 9, 2016 at 9:45 am #41825quote Bullie:I took the little 58 out this evening. It ran pretty good and seemed to be pumping water ok at all speeds. If the packing is completely gone and needing replacing, then that motor may have been over molested. Only need 1/8 – 1/4 turn in, to tighten the needles on those.
August 9, 2016 at 1:28 pm #41832I will have to take a look at it. It has been a while since I worked on this motor and I do not remember the condition of the packing. It must have not been what I thought though as, by the the time I got to the lake, the needles had unscrewed to the point I was wondering what the heck was wrong with the motor when I tried to start it. After bringing the high speeding back to around its proper setting, she started right up. But, I did have a "what the what?" look on my face after the 3rd or 4th pull.
I normally replace the packing. Maybe I didn’t for some reason on this motor.
