I have a lower unit that I am trying to get working to put on a 57 Elgin 7.5 with neutral shift. The shift cable is locked up. I’ve soaked PB blaster for days but no luck. I don’t know exactly how it is supposed to work so I’m hesitant to force it in a way that isn’t correct. Attached some pics so maybe someone could explain what I should do to free it up.
ThanksML
July 15, 2022 at 5:37 pm #263006I don’t have a solution, only to comment I don’t recall ever seeing one stuck, even here in the land of salt and sea. That’s a wonder in itself.
July 15, 2022 at 7:31 pm #263009What’s the model number? I have some Elgin microfiche. Maybe seeing an exploded view would shed some light on how that works. From your two pictures, I can’t see how it would even come apart to fix it.

July 15, 2022 at 7:57 pm #263012In absence of the “real” model number, take a wild guess at it as maybe 571.58781
EDIT: I don’t think that’s right. Wouldn’t the motor in question be a pea green Elgin? Like 571.58751
Heck,, I dunno.

We have a bingo. 571 58781. It is pea green. Pictures don’t show the color.
I’m having a hard time figuring out what is the issue but like I said, don’t want to snap the cable-

July 16, 2022 at 3:05 pm #263046So the pictures seem to show that it shifts an actual clutch, like a regular FNR cluch dog, that slide back and forth on the prop shaft, with a cam that moves up and down. The cam/plunger is sprung down, but is supposed to lift up with the cable.. It looks like the whole thing should just pull vertically up and out, once the gear case is removed from the leg. #19 seems to be the retainer. Maybe you can pry up on the cam, through the prop shaft hole?

July 16, 2022 at 3:11 pm #263050PS: The closest I could come was 571.58782 but I bet that’s close enough.
