On this ’57 Evinrude I have, there is a recess on the side of the block that the parts manual says takes an "Oil reservoir welch plug", #44 in the diagram. I see it also in the ’55 and ’56 manual but not ’58. It’s only a recess not connected to anything and this particular motor didn’t have a plug. Is the plug needed…what’s its function (over an empty recess)?
I’ve never pulled one out so I don’t know what’s on the other side but, I’m betting it was for mounting the block in a fixture back at the factory so they could hold it for machining purposes. If I have a scrap block I’ll pull it out to see just what it is covering up.
