Never owned one of these and am curious about the “Bail-A-Matic feature.
I am guessing the pick-up connection for the feature is the port near the shift handle.
Does this port need to be closed (plugged) if the feature is not going to be used or can I simply leave it open?
      Thanks

The port ( nipple) does not need to be closed. Think about if you had the hose and pick up in the bilge and the bilge was dry…. same condition. Now, I don’t know the details of the impellor arrangement, but there must be a bleed from the cooling pump to the bail pump to keep the bail impellor wet at all times the engine is running.

My reason for asking was curiosity about the pickup at the end of the bailer hose, in some photos I’ve seen.
I got to wondering if it might have contained a float to keep the the pickup line closed when the pickup was not submerged.

No, it’s always open and ready to suck bilge water.
