      The fifteen dollar Sportwin I just shortened fired right up today but it has an issue or two. It runs great at higher speeds and pumps water like it should but it doesn’t want to idle very good. It lean sneezes and opening the needles much more makes it run too rich. After fiddling with it for a while I noticed dirty oil running down the exhaust housing on the stbd side. Then I found the source. It was puking out of the crankcase joint near the top cylinder. 🙁

      On a positive note, it shifts well, has great compression, and it isn’t making any knocking noises so it will be worth tearing it down to re-seal the crankcase. Guess I might as well fix the broken hood mount on the cylinder head at the same time and figure out why some PO used a T-stat style head gasket on it.

        Fifteen dollar Sportwin has a nice ring to it! Looks like you have the makings of a good motor Mumbles. What is your approach to fixing the hood mount? I have a motor with a bad one too and had a hard time coming up with a fix for it. I was wondering if maybe the end of a melon baller would work somehow to provide some support for the rubber bumper. Obviously it’s not the right thing for one of your beautiful restored motors but it might be functional for just a daily runner.

          Mumbles, I’m jealous, I "way over-paid" for the 57 Sportwin I picked
          up a few days ago. Minus what I can get for the pressure tank that
          came with it, I probably have around $50 into my motor.
          I can only hope that mine has compression as good as yours!

            If it was just the dowel missing, I’d make a new one and drill out the head and epoxy it on like I’ve done on other motors. On this motor though, a much bigger piece is missing, including the cup for Johnson hoods but I got lucky and found it jammed in the hood latch. If I can’t weld it back on, I should have a Johnson head I can use and make the dowels up for the Evinrude hood mounts.

              Well, the PO certainly was not a stickler for details. Sure looks like there should be a big water leak at the top of the head with the thermo head gasket installed. Oh well, the head has to come off for the head gasket anyway, so I’m sure you will find a creative way to reattach the broken cover mounting.
              OK, you say the engine sneezes lean, but adjusting the needle makes it too rich. I suppose it could be possible that there is a problem with the pressure tank/lines/intake manifold causing a lean condition… Perhaps this condition caused the crankcase leak due to excess backfire/sneezing.
