I’m converting a CDL-15 (58 Johnson 5.5hp) back to a standard-length lower unit. Searching through my parts stash I find several drive shafts that “look” right but I’d like to verify the length to make sure it is a proper fit.
My drive shaft measures 20 5/16″ in total length.
Is that the correct drive shaft?
Thanks for the help.

November 24, 2021 at 6:10 pm #250213Twenty and five is a good number for your driveshaft. Just don’t use it in a CD-10, 11, or 12 as those motors use a slightly shorter shaft and using this one could bind it up.

November 25, 2021 at 7:58 am #250240The 20 5/16″ drive shaft measures 1/4″ shorter than the other drive shafts I have. I was thinking the 20 5/16″ is the proper one and not the 20 9/16″.
November 25, 2021 at 8:42 am #250242I’m probably over thinking this but it appears that the drive shaft measures….7/8″ from the top of the shaft to the casting after installation. In other words, it protrudes 7/8″ above the casting.

What casting? Can you post a photo?

November 25, 2021 at 12:58 pm #250264By the way…the photo I posted is a CD-20 not the CD-15 I’m referring to in the above questions. I only posted the CD-20 as an example of the measurement I was asking about for the CD-15.
Sorry for any confusion. I just don’t want to error by installing too long a drive shaft.November 25, 2021 at 1:39 pm #250267Without having a CD setup handy, couldn’t you measure the depth of the spline area on the powerhead? If it quits raining I’ll go out to the shop and measure one.
On these two piece driveshafts, The shaft should be rotated as it is inserted into the shock absorber as there is a socket it fits into at the bottom of the shock absorber. Usually you can feel it drop in the last little bit.
