I have been using these coils for years without any problems. Was told awhile ago they were made in China. My question is are their coils available that are not made in China?. Do sierra coils fit the way that the OMC coils do?. Still do not have a problem with these coils but would like to use products made in North America. Thanks all sorry for the beatin up topic. Russ…
October 29, 2020 at 11:23 am #219590I have used a couple dozen Sierra coils and not had a problem. I don’t know where they are made. You sometimes have to hold pressure on them inward toward the center of the mag plate while tightening them down so they don’t rub on the flywheel.
DaveOctober 29, 2020 at 1:42 pm #219599don’t worry to much about China coils….they will be perfect for all the next generation of imported outboards from China ….

October 29, 2020 at 2:00 pm #219602I know BRP coils used to be made in Malaysia so I’m guessing that got to be too expensive for BRP so they must source them from China now.
On a side note, a new broiler pan for my oven arrived from Amazon today and guess what it says on the wrapping? Something I haven’t seen for a long, long time. Maybe it’s old stock and had been sitting in a dusty warehouse for many years! ☺ ☺ ☺
October 29, 2020 at 5:49 pm #219645well as a side note…. my US made 2 year John Deere e130 lawn tracker dumped 2 cups of transmission oil on my garage floor last winter …sorry guys
with 30 days to go on my 2 year warranty they replaced the transmission…free 🙂
but I paid $2000 CDN (about 1350 U$) for a lawn tractor selling $2799 U$ in Platsburg 60 miles away … dumping ????

October 30, 2020 at 6:09 am #219700We westerners have been at the top of the industrial and economic food chain for so long, that we think we are invincible. So when we buy things, our primary driving force is cost. The last thing most of us think of is national pride or national security. The Chinese eat this up. They can steal, and I mean STEAL, designs with no threat of ANY consequence, make products that are either average or inferior quality, sell them for a cost that they know we can’t resist (because we allow these bogus products into the country) and put their opposition out of business, one company at a time. Nobody cares to realize that they are taking over the world with patience and determination, slowly but surely, without ever having to fire a single shot. I am not a conspiracy theorist. This is just a fact.
Crosbyman, you keep bringing up your American made lawn tractor. Hey, we are far from perfect, I am sure. However, I can’t help but wonder where that transmission itself was built…..or where the seals themselves were manufactured….That’s the other thing about this problem. It is very intertwined and complicated, and has slowly grown that way over time, because we have let it happen.
Long live American manufacturing!
October 30, 2020 at 8:26 am #219703I was a buyer for a major department store chain in NYC for 21 years. I would often hear from the customers “how come you don’t have anything made in America”? Well after many years of this, I bought a few items (when I could find a USA supplier, since most had moved their production out of the country). The USA items cost more than their overseas counterparts, even with the offshore products shipping and duties. Well long story short …..the customers didn’t buy them, why, they said they were too expensive. Unfortunately in most cases, the consumer shops price tag first. It’s no mystery why price driven chains like Walmart, and Harbor Freight have done so well.
