I have a 1961 Sears Elgin 7.5 hp outboard. It needed a new water pump impeller. My problem is how to reinstall the lower unit. I can’t figure out how the shift assembly goes in. Can anyone tell me how this goes back together ?

Is that the low profile motor? Trying to understand the question…Do you have the gearcase apart? Did you pull the powerhead to get to where you are now? I’m not so sure I have the answer but I do have the service manual. What I do remember is those early low profile Scott mcCulloch motors were the worst @#%@& thing I’ve ever gotten into. Well not mentioning the Merc auto tranny.

It is the low profile motor . I did not remove the power head I just removed the two bolts that hold the lower unit on . the gear selector slid out of this hole in the lower unit. Thanks for the service manual it will help a lot.
            THANKS for the responses
