I’m working on a 1962 Gale 25 HP and I have a question regarding the flywheel key part number.

My book says 306253 which I don’t have. I do however have quite a few 35HP Evinrude Johnsons part# 302602

They look the same but haven’t tried a fit yet. Do you think these are interchangable? Thanks Ken

Well, I do know they are different, but not sure I remember in what respect.  I think they are just a bit different on the rounded part that goes into the crankshaft–perhaps shallower or an edge break or something like that.  You might be able to take a file to the 302602 and modify it enough to work (??)

Thanks Frank. I will try that. Just humor me here. …The 1955 30 hp Evinrude crankshaft is not the same as the Gale 25hp crank??. I have a ‘ 55 crank and its flywheel key looks the  same as the 35 hp key. But now I’m just guessing and confused. I will have to get a hold of a 302602 key first. I forgot to mention the 25 hp key was sheared. Thanks again Ken

As I remember it (??) the keyway in the shaft differed just slightly.  Go to marineengine.com and search for the two key numbers and enlarge the thumbnail pictures.  I think you will be able to see a difference.
