Hello, I’ve just joined AOMCI since I acquired a 1962 Mercury 700 70HP on my 62 Orlando Clipper. I’ve never dealt with this motor before, but been reading terms like “Dockbuster” because of the direct reverse. What is the best way to operate this motor safely? I’m nervous that my first time out (after I finish tuning it up, changing the impeller, etc) is going to be a steep learning curve over using my old 69 Evinrude Sportster 25 which was pretty straightforward. I know these “Tower of Power” motors are pretty beefy so I don’t want to blow anything up on my first outing.
Dave B. will fill you in on the reversing powerhead operation. I recommend earplugs when you run it! Those old Mercs are fast…..but very noisy! Have Fun!
FYI: Reversing powerheads have worked very well on 2-stroke Polaris snowmobiles for years. My 2009 has it…..but on a snowmobile, you come to a dead stop before changing to reverse, and you are not at the mercy of wind and waves while changing over.
Dave
Dave, thanks so much for your advice, but I realize I may have made a mistake! I read that ALL of that era of 700’s were Direct Reverse, but in looking at some wiring diagrams I saw “Full Gear Shift” and, low and behold, in very faded decals my engine is Full Gear Shift, and not the Direct Reverse model.
you lucked out. great motor. much easier to operate.
Yea, when I saw the motor on that I did some research and read that those 700’s are sought after because they are such beasts. Glad I got my hands on one, now just fingers crossed that it starts and runs well! After sitting for a half dozen years I am being very gentle with it before getting it lubricated and barrel tested (which I can do now that I have a neutral!).
