Hey friends, I have a 66″ 6hp Evinrude I rebuilt, I disassembled the carb too. cleaned and all. It runs Phenomenal! BUT! The first start, I have to spray it with a little starting fluid, and it fires right up! I can shut it off, and restart it several times that day with no problems or anymore spray. But, if it sits for a day or 2, have to spray it. Its not s huge issue, but do I need to adjust my mixture needle a little more? Fuel pump works excellent too, Im thinking maybe just minor adjustment needed on the carb?
August 13, 2021 at 1:41 am #244804These motors are very easy starting so make sure the choke butterfly is closing all the way when you pull it out. If it is, you can always open the low speed mixture screw a half turn or so to help richen the mixture when starting it cold. Also make sure the carb is fully primed and the bulb on the hose feels firm. No spraying of anything in the carb should be required.

August 13, 2021 at 7:21 am #244806Sometimes… going beyond START on the throttle indicator can help … my 9.5hp (1966) is also a pain in that respect but I recently noticed the cam follower was off a bit
… to be lake tested… asa I get a chance 🙂

August 13, 2021 at 8:41 am #244810Mumbles- I will certainly take another look at the choke butterfly, I’m thinking I may just have to adjust the needle a tad. I never had to use Spray before the rebuild, couple pumps of the primer bulb, 2 pulls and fired up! so may need a little tweaking on the carb yet.
August 13, 2021 at 8:43 am #244811Crosbyman-I adjusted my cam follower to what looked to be right, as I told Mumbles, I may have to adjust my carb just a tad, and maybe turn my cam follower back to where it was before! It worked then! lol I thought I got it dial in.
August 13, 2021 at 10:22 am #244814What crosbyman said. Give it a bit more throttle (past START).
August 13, 2021 at 11:00 am #244825Exactly! If you remove the hood and turn the grip until the carb butterfly is about 1/4 open or so, look at the pointer on the grip and I’ll guarantee it won’t be lined up with the word start! I always give them lots of throttle and quickly turn it back down as soon as the motor lights up.

August 13, 2021 at 4:46 pm #244837Have you checked to make sure the choke butterfly is closing all the way? Perhaps you didn’t assemble the choke linkage properly….

August 13, 2021 at 8:51 pm #244849Are you priming it every time with the fuel hose primer ? If not, perhaps the fuel is running back to the tank and emptying the carb bowl?
What kind of compression does it have ? A motor with low compression may need a bit of go-juice when it’s cold and the rings are loose.
